Aggregate Embedment & Jahn Patches
When it comes to color matching a patch, sometimes an aggregate is better than matching the mortar color. Yes, there are times when a straight-up matched mortar color is what is needed. Our Jahn Standard and Premium Colors are the perfect starting point; use as-is or combine 2 or 3 colors on site. Our Custom Color Match solution is also an option in the rare case that our Standard and Premium Colors are not close enough.
But when a structure naturally has gradients of color and varying textures, a single, matte color may not be the best choice. Granite and marble, with their myriad of colors and textures, always fall into this category, but other masonry can also be included.
When you have varying color and texture, the best solution is to add aggregate to the surface of the patch. Don't (repeat: don't) add the aggregate to the bucket of mortar. Add the aggregate to the surface only.
What Aggregate to Use
It's critical to use the actual material removed when prepping for your patch. Nothing will match like the actual substrate. Collect the demoed stone and process into the appropriate aggregate. Smooth finish, a fine aggregate. Rough finish, a larger aggregate.
How to Apply the Aggregate
Again, do not add the aggregate to the bucket/mortar mix. You want to install the aggregate to the surface. I have found that the best method is to simply wet the aggregate and push it into the face of the patching mortar.
Pay attention to the areas surrounding the patch and match those areas as much as possible. Remember to assess from 20 feet away--not 12 inches. That distance will give you a more accurate assessment of the match from an everyday point-of-view.
If you want to go one step further with your use of aggregate, lock it in with a single coating of our clear Liquid Silicate. This coating has a perm rating of 92, so it will not prevent the natural flow of moisture and salt, and it will help in naturally blending the original and patched areas.
