Tunnel Grime Leads to a New CSP Cleaner: Oxidation Remover

In 2019, Cathedral Stone was engaged by the Manhattan Transit Authority to come up with a cleaner for the specialty tiles used throughout the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels. A majority of commercially available cleaners had been used with limited success, and the products that were successful required too many rinse-and-collect cycles to reach neutralization.

Specialized commercial trucks, with spinning brushes on boom lifts, and heated pressure washing were used to perform the cleaning mockups.

After testing our standard line of cleaners and removers, it was determined that a cleaner needed to be engineered with the specific conditions present in the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels. Several dirty tiles were extracted from each tunnel and sent to Cathedral Stone's lab for testing. The result of this work is our Oxidization Remover cleaner.

Oxidization Remover has since been tested on various types of unique staining with great results. The product has successfully removed biological, carbon, and rust staining on other difficult-to-clean projects where our standard cleaners and removers were not as effective.
