Permeability & Masonry Restoration [DEMO]
What’s Permeability? In the masonry world, it’s the potential of a material to allow moisture and salt to pass through. Think of a scale from 0-100 — where 0 would allow no moisture or salt to pass through and 100 would allow 100% of the moisture and salt to pass through.
The average masonry perm rating is 30. That’s the bar in masonry restoration. If you’re using a product with a perm rating under 30, you are not allowing moisture and salt to pass through your repair. This will cause the repair to fail. Perm ratings under 30 are still permeable — they’re just not permeable enough for proper use in masonry restoration. A perm rating of 30 or higher is absolutely essential for successful masonry restoration.
If you know us and our products, you know that everything we do is about high-quality, long-lasting, do-no-harm restoration — whether we’re talking mortars, paints, or repellents. Our mortar perm ratings match natural masonry; our paints have a 92 perm rating; and our R97 Water Repellent has a perm rating of 97.
